Background
L&H Safety & Environmental Management has worked in close partnership with the University of Edinburgh on a number of major projects. One of the largest is the £32 million refurbishment of the University Library in George Square in the heart of Edinburgh. The eight-storey “A Listed’ building was designed by Sir Basil Spence in the early Sixties to accommodate 2,500 readers and two million books.
The Challenge
During the current eight-year refurbishment programme, the University requires the library to remain in full use. The challenge is to clean up the significant amount of asbestos involved during building refurbishment whilst allowing academic life to continue.
The Solution
Due to the scale of the works, the successful removal of all contamination can only be achieved by providing stringent safety procedures and constantly monitoring air quality. Our years of experience in dealing with specialist asbestos removal consultancies capable of working in sensitive environments enable us to put these processes into place and successfully monitor them throughout the project’s lifespan.
